My love for writing began with a profound connection to poetry. I was captivated by the works of influential poets, and none more so than Phyllis Wheatley. Her poetry, filled with profound meaning, ignited a spark within me from an early age. As a fellow black writer, I found a special resonance in her words that made her writing all the more fascinating.

I vividly remember an elementary school event where we were encouraged to dress up as our favorite historical figures. It was a celebration of the United States Bicentennial in 1976, and I chose to embody Phyllis Wheatley. Clad in a white apron and a dark purple dress, I joined my fourth-grade classmates in paying homage to the giants of the past. It was a joyous day, as we embraced the legacy of those who came before us, even at such a young age.

Exploring More Poetry

Fuelled by my deep appreciation for poetry, I embarked on a quest to discover more. I delved into books that compiled the works of renowned poets like Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, and Maya Angelou, among many others. Each new poem exhilarated me, expanding my understanding and love for the art form. Maya Angelou, in particular, left an indelible mark on me with her eloquent speech and poetic prowess. These poets from the past set a high standard of excellence, providing a foundation from which I could compare and strive for artistic quality.
